The Artisans
The manufacture of the baskets is a family affair, with men, women and children all involved in the process of harvesting, drying and dyeing of the grass as well as the design and weaving of the baskets. The men are also responsible for fixing the leather trim to the handles for increased strength, durability and enhanced appearance.
As a basket is woven it just looks like a hairy mass, with “spines” sticking out all over. Once the basket is complete, the excess protruding grass is trimmed with a sharp blade to reveal the beautiful colours and patterns beneath.
